HOW IT WORKS

Step 1

After applying to be a Neighbor and completing training, we will match you with a family in need
of support and friendship.

Step 2
Once you’ve been matched, we will help introduce you to the family you will be building a
relationship with.

Step 3
During your match, we will provide support for six months to you and the family to help everyone
feel comfortable.

Step 4
After six months, you will graduate from our Neighbors program! We encourage you to continue
the friendship on your and the family’s own terms.

THE COMMITMENT

Our volunteer Neighbors commit to six months of giving support to a family through monthly meals and
friendship. On average this support costs the Neighbor $10/month per member of the family. Some Neighbors also find it helpful to provide special treats, groceries, or care packages in addition to the monthly commitment.

CURRENT LOCATIONS

We are currently focusing on the Metro Detroit Area, including Wayne County, Oakland County and Macomb County. Typically, we try to match you with families within fifteen miles. In some instances though, it may be farther away. Also, as long as there is a family who has applied for support in the area, we are able to match Neighbors across Michigan.

NEXT STEPS

Fill Out Our Application

Apply below to become an official Neighbor! If other adults (age 18+) in the home plan to join you in connecting with your family, they will also need to complete a background check. If you have children joining under the age of 18, you must sign a release form for them to participate.

Complete a Background Check

Upon receiving your application, we will send a link with how to complete your Background Check. This step costs $20 and is the responsibility of the Neighbor. Outside of supporting your matched family, this will be your only expense.

Complete Our Online Training

We will provide you with a link and password to access our short self-paced training online. You can complete it whenever it is most convenient for you, although within a week of applying is ideal.

Commit & Expand Your Circle

When you are matched with a family you are committing to offer consistent support for 6 months. During this time, we will continue to offer guidance until you graduate from The Neighbors Project. You are welcome and encouraged to continue building a relationship with your family as long as both parties are comfortable and interested. Our hope is that after your first 6 months of being a Neighbor you will be inspired and empowered to continue expanding your circle by reaching out to families and individuals who feel isolated and in need of support in your community.
